Characteristics of feather powder: Poultry feathers are mainly composed of keratin. Most of the amino acids in feather keratin are hydrophobic amino acids. Hydrophobic amino acids are distributed on the periphery of keratin. A small amount of hydrophilic amino acids and groups are contained in the peptide bonds and protein skeletons. Many disulfide bonds are formed between the peptide chains, presenting a cord-like structure. The properties are extremely stable and completely insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid and dilute hydrochloric acid solutions, so it is called insoluble protein. Because there are many disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds between the polypeptide chains of feathers, the structure of feather protein is particularly stable. If they are not treated, the digestive enzymes in the animal digestive tract basically cannot digest and decompose them. Therefore, an extruder is used to puff feathers. The principle is to use the high temperature, high pressure and high shearing effect in the extruder. The feathers are instantly subjected to high temperatures of 160ºC or above and certain catalysts during puffing, so that the feathers are decompressed and puffed at the die hole, destroying the firm spatial structure of keratin and breaking the disulfide bonds. Keratin fibers become smaller protein subunits and linearly arranged peptide chain groups, which are easy to be digested and absorbed by animals. The puffing method is a new technology that has just started at home and abroad.
